本研究は、戦後冷戦期、とくにイギリスの国際交流機関であるブリティッシュ・カウンシルが旧ソ連・東欧諸国に向けて展開した文化外交において、イギリスが自国をどのように表象することで効果的な外交戦略を達しえたのかを、歴史実証的かつ理論的に解明しようとするものである。今年度とくに集中的に資料収集した国は、チェコスロバキアである。同国は、戦前より共産主義の隆盛に対して比較的寛容であった一方で、第二次世界大戦中、ベネシュ亡命政権がロンドンに樹立されたこと、またミュンヘン会談後、イギリス国民の同国に対する同情心が高まったことから両国の関係に変化が生じ、戦争直後の1947年、東欧諸国で唯一、イギリスと文化協約を締結した。しかし、1948年2月のクーデター勃発によりソ導のチェコスロバキアへの圧力が増大した結果、50年の協約破棄にいたっている。夏の出張では、春にひきつづき、英国公文書館において、ブリティッシュ・カウンシルおよびイギリス外務省の資料収集を行った。さらに、これまでに収集したチェコスロバキア関連の文書をもとに、学術論文を完成し国際的な学術雑誌へ投稿することを目標に、ロンドン大学図書館において執筆作業を続けた。本論文では、ソ連による政治的・軍事的統制が強まるなかで、マスメディアによるイギリスへの虚偽報道、スパイ容疑で秘密警察に摘発されるカウンシル職員の動向などを考察し、同時に、イギリスが「文化」を通じてどのようにソ連的共産主義に対抗し、西側の影響力を浸透させようかと画策する事情を論じた。拙論は現在、冷戦史関係の学術雑誌に投稿中であるが、刊行済みの以下の論考でも、この問題に触れている。
