「辻が花染」とは、中世に行われた日本独特の染織技法で、現代では中世の染め模様を指す言葉として定着している。しかし中世の文献にある「辻が花染」と現存する資料とは同一ではないと言われ、その実態は全く明らかにされていない。本研究では、従来通説だった文字資料の解釈について再検討を試み、これまで曖昧だった「辻が花染」の定義をより明確にすることが第一の目的である。そこで、今年度は、近代から現代にかけての染織史研究(あるいは日本風俗史研究上の服飾史研究)図書を中心に資料を収集し、研究史上に現われる「辻が花染」という用語の使用過程を追った。中世染め模様である「辻が花染」と呼ばれる伝存資料について、素材・色・技法・模様構成といった諸要素を詳細に調査し、体系立てられたデータに従って中世の染め模様の編年基準を設定するため、今年度は、京都国立博物館、山形・櫛引町黒川能上座、岐阜・関市春日神社、千葉・国立歴史民俗博物館、大阪・藤田美術館、名古屋市・徳川美術館の各所に所蔵される「辻が花染」関連資料を調査した。撮影可能な作品に関しては、デジタル一眼レフカメラで撮影し、実測調査を行った。調査報告書作成のため、昨年に引き続き、調査データのデジタル化作業を進めた。調査によって収集された画像資料はコンピュータに一括管理し、デジタル・データとして保存した。同時に、ファイル・メーカーに素材・色・技法・模様構成に関する情報を順次入力し、データの構築を進めた。入力された調査データは整理し、順次校正を行った。計画では、今年度中に調査報告書を製本する予定であったが、調査報告書を作成するための予算が十分に確保できなかったため、今年度に編集した報告書用データは、来年度東京国立博物館で発行する『平成18年度東京国立博物館紀要』に掲載することとした。また、これらのデータをさらに蓄積し有効に活用できるよう、これまでの調査した資料を個別にCD-RWに収めた。
