本研究では、英語授業におけるディベート指導法開発のため、実践のプロセスに焦点をあてた。ディベートには「試合」から連想される表面的困難さ・複雑さがあるが、実際の日本の高校における教室実践では、試合までの過程(「前段階活動」)に教師の重点が置かれており、そこには英語のディベート指導を多くの教員が共有できる要素があった。まず前段階活動を、ある程度固定された大きな流れであるマクロ・レベルと、実際の活動(ミクロ・レベル)の2つのレベルで解釈し、各マクロ・レベルで、いかなるミクロの活動があるかを実態調査(高校)によって解明した。また、各実践の教育目標も加味することで、目的に応じた柔軟な活動の選択ができる。たとえば、教育目標が「4技能の統合」の場合は、「ディベートを通したリーディング力の向上」とは異なるミクロの活動が、選択される傾向にあるからである。参加協力校のなかで一例(観察校)をあげると、そこでは他人の意見を聞いて、自分の考えをまとめ発言し、議論ができる英語の表現能力を身に付けさせる、という年間の教育目標が掲げられていた。これは、総合的な能力を身につけさせる、という教育目標であるといってよいであろう。実際の前段階活動では、マイクロディベート、およびサーキットスピーチ(2チームに分かれ、相手チームのスピーチに対して質問しサマリーをし、相互を比較し勝敗をつける。この活動を通しディベートの前半部分[反駁以前]までに慣れる)が実践された。さらに、ディベートを全面的に学校に取り入れようとする試みがなされた。たとえば、1)県のディベート大会(年一回)の主催、2)他教科との連携を試みるため、日本語による校内ディベート大会を開く、などといったものである。このような実践のデータベース化、および理論書にある規範的な側面を加え、英語によるディベート授業のガイドラインが作成された。
