本研究は,アングロ・サクソン期農村社会の展開を,ウスター司教座所領を対象として長期的視点から追究するものである。科研費交付最終年度の本年は,今後の研究進展を目指して,以下二点から検討を進めた。1.都市=農村関係の解明歴代司教の所領政策に関する検討を,今年度は都市=農村関係の視点から行った(本年度当初の目標達成に不可欠と判断したため)。まず,司教座都市ウスターに関する近年の発掘成果を,イギリスに赴いて収集した。これら考古学的知見を,研究代表者が文字史料の検討から得てきた見解と突き合わせた結果,10世紀以降司教によってウスターが整備されていったこと(防壁拡大,空間再配置,市場地創設・改良),これに伴って住民が増加したこと(教区教会の複数創設),こうした都市的成長を背景に,司教座は,多様な奉仕を見返りにして,都市=農村リンク型の所領譲与を行ったことが明らかとなった。ここからは,当該期の司教座による所領経営政策転換(直接経営縮小と積極的運営)に,地域での活発な流通が関わっていた可能性を指摘できると同時に,この時期の頻繁な譲与で形成された「自給自足的」な小所領が荘園制成立を導いたという従来の説に,再検討を要請することができる(6月に学会発表の予定)。2.史料論に関する研究動向の整理史料分析に新たな視角を導入するため,近年盛んな史料論的立場からの研究に注目した。「史料学」で真正と判断された史料情報を重視してきた従来の歴史学に対し,近年では,偽文書を含めた多様な史料を,当時の歴史的文脈に位置づけて理解する試みが盛んである。この動向は,検討対象となる史料の幅を広げると共に,従来とは異なる次元での史料の読解を可能にする。伝来史料の限られた中世初期に関しては,この「史料論」研究の持つ可能性はとりわけ大きい。そこで本年度は日本学界の動向を整理し,その成果と課題を指摘した。昨秋に九州大学で報告したこの内容は,「日本学界におけるイギリス中世史料論研究の動向」として,『愛媛大学教育学部紀要』に発表予定である。
