平成15年度年度の研究結果から、戦前と戦後の郊外化には、量的な違いだけでなく、質的な違いも大きいことが明らかになった。質的な違いの一つに、家事使用人(女中)の有無がある。戦前の郊外世帯の多くは女中を使用していたが、戦後の郊外世帯では女中は稀になり、替わって家事を担うようになったのは冷蔵庫、掃除機などの耐久消費財であった。平成16年度は、この女中から耐久消費財への変化を、統計的な裏付けをもとに明らかにした。データとしては、国勢調査や、消費動向調査などを予定しており、関連するデータの収集・入力を行って実態を明らかにした。その結果をまとめると以下のようになる。・東京都における女中就業者数のピークは1940年で、18万人が就業しており、女性就業者の20.4%に相当する。なお、女性就業者に占める女中の割合が最も高かったのは1930年で、28.6%であった。しかし終戦後の1950年の国勢調査では5万人にまでに東京都の女中は激減した。・高度経済成長を担った主要な家電製品(テレビ、電気冷蔵庫、電気掃除機、電気洗濯機)の普及過程を検討すると、どれも東京や大阪の都市部から普及が始まり、1960年代の10年間で全国に普及した。・この結果から、戦前の都市化・郊外化は経済発展の結果を示すものであるが、戦後の都市化・郊外化は経済発展の一部を構成するものであったと言うことができる。
