日本古代における鴟尾・鬼瓦に関する研究資料の集積を目的として、発掘調査報告書や図録などをもとにして検討対象とする資料を抽出・集成作業をおこなった。そのなかで、東北地方の古代山岳寺院として重要な岩手・国見山廃寺出土鬼瓦(平安時代)、胆沢城出土鬼瓦(平安時代)新出資料である神奈川県茅ヶ崎市下寺尾廃寺出土鬼瓦(奈良時代)、奈良・法隆寺出土鬼瓦・鴟尾(飛鳥時代〜奈良時代)、奈良県奈良市山村廃寺出土鬼瓦(白鳳時代)、京都・平安宮出土鬼瓦(平安時代)等を実見し調査した。いずれも出土遺跡等の見学もあわせて行った。法隆寺の資料については飛鳥時代から奈良時代までの鬼瓦・鴟尾の流れを追い、これまでの復原が間違っていることなどもあきらかとし、『法隆寺 日本仏教美術の黎明』での考古部門の展示に生かすことができた。また、下寺尾廃寺とあわせて武蔵・相模の国分寺・尼寺資料とを検討した結果、いずれも文様面、製作技術面、さらには瓦葺技術に深く関わる要素においても平城宮式鬼瓦の系統に属していることが明らかにできた。武蔵や相模という限定的な地域に平城宮式の直接的系譜を示す道具瓦が分布していることは興味深く、近々その検討結果を公表したいと考えている。また、山村廃寺の蓮華文鬼瓦の范が奥山廃寺の蓮華文鬼瓦の外縁を鋸歯文を表出するべく改范されたものであることは以前から知られていたが、山村廃寺の軒丸瓦はその改范後の鬼瓦范で製作されたという興味深い事実が昨年明らかになった。さらに詳細に鬼瓦及び"同范"の軒丸瓦を調査することで、外縁の改范は鋸歯文を彫出した埋木によっておこなうことで法隆寺式という文様構成を固守しようとした様相を明らかにした。瓦製作に使われる木范で埋木という技法が確認される例は非常に珍しく、この成果を古代瓦研究会で発表し、文章化したものを『古代瓦研究IV』に発表する。
