项目摘要

今年度は最終年度であり、現在までの調査の総括と補足調査を行った。まず、2005年9月に開催された日本宗教学会学術大会において、パネル「死者の祭祀と供養-集団性と個人性の葛藤と共存」のなかで「死者に対する慰撫と顕彰」というタイトルで発表した。当該科研費の研究成果をふまえ、岩手県中部においては当初、哀れむべき慰撫される死者たちが来世の幸福な姿として絵額にされたが、不幸な慰撫される存在の延長上にあった戦死者が、御真影等の肖像形式となり、顕彰として写真を使用するようになった。それ以降、不幸な死者だけでなく、天寿を全うした老人などの遺影も奉納されるようになり、死者が顕彰される存在として捉えられるようになったことを報告した。さらに今までの成果のうち、岩手県宮守村長泉寺の絵額・遺影調査の資料を整理し、「近代における遺影の成立と死者表象」という論考をまとめ、『国立歴史民俗博物館研究報告』132号に掲載された。ここでは絵額の成立と特徴を詳細に検討し、絵額が供養を目的としていること、夭折の死者や連続して死亡した使者など特に慰撫すべき存在であること、ある程度のパターンができていることなどが明らかになった。そうした絵額から遺影への変化は、戦死者において顕著であり、そこには顕彰のまなざしがあり、それ以降になると不幸な死者にも遺影を用いることがわかってきた。こうした遺影への変化は、表象のあり方が現世の記憶を基盤にしただけでなく、写真それ自体が死者そのものの表象として使われるようになり、人々の遺影への意味づけは多義的になっていた。こうして近代の国民国家形成の過程において、とくに戦死者の祭祀との関連から、死者の表象のあり方が大きく変わるとともに、死の意味づけを変えていったこと明らかになった。
