近年における非正規職に就く若年者の急増の要因として親への経済的依存がしばしばあげられる。前年度までに実施した20歳代男女とその親を対象に実施したアンケート調査の個票をもとに構築したデータベースを用いて、第一に、確かに子にとって親への経済的依存の代表的なものである親との同居と非正規職の選択には正の相関がみられるものの、同居以外では日常的な親からの金銭的援助をはじめ、潜在的な子への経済的援助能力としてみなせる親の職業、職種、収入と子(20歳代男女)の職業との間には明確な関連性は見つけられず、親から子への経済的援助が職業選択を決定づける主要な要因であるとは言えないことを確認した。第二に、就業形態選択関数を推計することによって、親との同居に関する変数を外生変数とみなせば、親との同居が若年者の非正規職への選好を強めるという説を支持する結果を得た。しかし、操作変数法を用いて親との同居の内生性によるバイアスを除去した結果、同居は就業形態選択に有意な影響は与えないことが示された。これは、非正規職を選択すると親と別居し独立するのが困難となり同居する傾向が強まるという因果関係が妥当であることを示唆するものと思われる。ただし、親の経済力が子の教育投資に影響していることもわかり、それが子の職業選択および家族形成にも影響していることも示唆されたため、親の経済力と子の行動の関係を間接的要因まで含めてより明らかにするためには、さらなる精緻なデータ蓄積と分析が必要であろう。
