项目摘要

今年度は、まず、アドリア海に面した北イタリアの都市アクィレイアで出土した碑文について論文をまとめた。従来、皇帝の宗教政策という観点から考察されてきたこの碑文に注目し、都市と皇帝の関係の中で考察しなおしたものである。この論文では、アクィレイアという都市の戦略的重要性ゆえに、この碑文が作成されたことを論証した。また、古代地中海世界の中で最も碑文の出土件数が多い地方の一つであるカンパニアについても研究に取り組んだ。コンスタンティヌス帝が水道を修復させたことを伝える碑文を皮切りに、都市が皇帝たちや元老院議員たちに対して捧げた顕彰碑文を考察した。そのテキストや残存状況から判断すると、カンパニア諸都市が皇帝たちとの間に関係を築くにあたっては、カンパニア州知事をはじめ元老院議員たちが大きな役割を果たしていたと考えられる。カンパニア地方は、もともと皇帝たちや元老院議員との関係の深い地域だった。3世紀以降、皇帝たちが前線の防衛に謀殺される中で、諸都市がその枠内で賄いきれない事業を進める際には、元老院議員など地元と縁の深い有力者を介して皇帝の支援を受けていたものと思われる。この他にも、3世紀から4世紀初頭の帝国統治構造の変容を明らかにすべく、様々な都市、地域について碑文研究を進めた。保存状況が良く碑文の出土件数も多いオスティアのフォルムの碑文や、近年発掘が盛んに進められているスペインのタラゴナ、コルドバ、メリダの他、小アジアのエフェソスなどを研究対象としている。その結果、ローマ帝国の「都市」という枠組みで単純化されがちだったこの時期の都市が、地域によって、あるいはそれぞれの都市の性格によって、全く異なる状況に置かれていたことが明らかになった。都市はローマ帝国の統治を支える細胞としての役割を果たす一方で、個々の共同体の利害を元に行動することも少なくなかったのである。
