本研究は、二者間の表情コミュニケーションにおいて人間の感性がどのように発揮されているかを解明することを目指して行われた。2年目となる平成18年度は、相手の表情に同調的な表情をつくることが後続するコミュニケーションにどのような影響を与えるかを引き続き検討すると共に、そのときの被験者の脳活動を光トポグラフィによって計測する予定であった。しかしながら、既に公刊された論文において同様のパラダイムでfMRIを利用した測定結果が得られたこと、さらに光トポグラフィの空間分解能では表情表出に関連した深部位を直接に調べることが難しいことから、脳活動の計測は十分に行うことができなかった。したがって、実験室において二者の対面場面を再現し、同調的表情がもともとの表出者の表情をどのように変容させるかを主に検討した。表情を見る側(受け手)が作る側(送り手)に合わせて同じ表情をつくることは、すでに数多くの研究において確認されている。しかしながら、送り手が同調的表情反応をフィードバックされたとき受け手に対してどう振舞うか、特に送り手が自身の表情をどのように変容させるかについては検討されてこなかった。そこで同調的表情反応が送り手の表情表出を維持させるかどうかを3つの実験から検討したところ、送り手は自らが笑顔および怒り顔をしているときに同調されるとその表出をより強い強度で維持させた。しかし悲しみ顔については同調されようがされまいが表出に変化はなかった。これは悲しみという感情が自己の内側に注意の向きやすい感情であることに起因すると考えられる。したがって同調的表情反応は、他者指向型の表情に限って、その表出を促進させることがわかった。この結果は、人間が他者から感情を向けられたときにどう振舞うべきかについての潜在的な知識、すなわちコミュニケーションにおける感性が外顕的な行動として表れた結果とみることができる。
