平成18年度では、車いすロードレースランナーと比較するための、健常者中・長距離ランナーのエネルギーバランスについて、ハートレートモニターによる心拍数法からまとめた結果を論文として報告することができた。また、運動習慣のない車いす利用者の調査(安静時代謝量の測定、身体状況調査)を実施することもできた。その結果、これまで調査してきた運動習慣のある対象者は、傷病原因が事故による脊髄損傷といった外傷性のものであり、受傷年齢は比較的若く、自立した生活を送ることができていたが、運動習慣のない車いす利用者の車椅子を利用する原因となった傷病名は脳梗塞や脳出血など脳血管疾患による麻痺、骨折等の整形疾患など、加齢に伴う疾患が中心であることが明らかとなった。また、運動習慣のない車いす利用者の、体重あたりの基礎代謝量は、男性21.0±5.5(11.8〜31.9)kcal/kgBW、女性は18.6±3.0(14.4〜22.7)kcal/kgBWとかなりばらつきがみられた。本結果については、2006年度の日本栄養改善学会学術総会で発表済みであり、現在投稿準備を進めている。今回の調査では対象者を車いす利用者と範囲を広げて、各個人の同意のもとでデータを得ることができたが、障害の状況や性、年齢がさまざまとなり、平均値を得て状況を把握するためには、より多くの対象者が必要である。また、新規の運動習慣のある対象者(特に車いすランナー)を得るため、これまでとは異なる大会にも着目し見学や研究打ち合わせを行ったが、競技者の意識が「娯楽」としてのスポーツと「競技」としてのスポーツに大きく分かれるため、結果として対象者の母数が減り、データを得にくい状況となった。しかしながら運動習慣のある車いす利用者の、身体づくりに対する意識は高く、今後も障害者スポーツと、その基礎となる栄養に着目し、研究を行っていきたい。
