絶滅危惧II類、および国の天然記念物に指定されるリュウキュウヤマガメGeoemyda japonicaに関しては、進化速度の速いミトコンドリアDNAの中でも最も速いとされるコントロール領域を新たに加えて分析を行った。その結果、個体群間、および各個体群内で全く変異がないことが明らかになった。これは環境変動に対する抵抗性が個体数から予測されるより弱いことを示しており、本種の保全上の重要性を改めて指摘している。さらに本種に関しては研究協力者と継続して、生態的な調査を行い、個体数や分布域など基礎的なデータの収集に努めた。絶滅危惧II類、および国の天然記念物に指定されるキシノウエトカゲEumeces kishinouyeiに関しては、宮古諸島の宮古島と多良間島、八重山諸島の石垣島と与那国島の個体群を加えて、ミトコンドリアDNAの12SリボゾームRNA遺伝子、16SリボゾームRNA遺伝子の分析を行った。その結果、個体群間で遺伝的多様性が極めて低いことが明らかになった。これはリュウキュウヤマガメと同様に本種が環境変動に対する抵抗性が弱いことを強く示唆している。特に互いに固有種を有し、独自の生物相を発達させている宮古諸島と八重山諸島の間、あるいは数種の固有種を有し、他の八重山諸島とは異なる生物相を有する与那国島と他の八重山諸島の間でさえも遺伝的多様性が失われたことは、比較的最近にボトルネック効果によって、多様性を喪失した後、再び分布域を拡大したものと解釈された。
