古墳出土の鉄製武具類について可能な限りデータを集成し、一覧表の体裁で整理した。報告書の刊行されているものについてはその記載をベースとし、調査が必要なものについては所蔵機関のご配慮をいただき、適宜資料調査を実施した。ただし、校務との関係で十分に資料調査の時間を確保することができず、当初の思惑のとおりには資料調査をおこなうことができなかった。一覧表は、短甲・挂甲などの甲や衝角付冑・眉庇付冑などの冑については各形式ごとに、頸甲・肩甲・籠手・草摺・臑当などの付属具については、各装具ごとに作成した。各表の行には各出土例をあて、列には各出土例の内容を示す項目を並べた。項目は大別して、出土古墳にかかわるデータと、各形式・装具についてのデータからなる。前者は所在地・墳形・墳丘長・埋葬施設・出土位置など、後者は各形式・装具ごとに設定した分類指標・それに基づいて認定した型式・セット関係などである。また、そのほかの項目として所蔵機関や文献がある。現状では一覧表となっているが、各出土例ごとのカード形式とし、画像や実測図などともリンクさせたい。なお、こうした作業については日本列島出土例のみならず、朝鮮半島出土例についてもおこなう必要があるが、現状では不十分なものにとどまっている。こうして収集・整理したデータを基礎として、各形式の甲冑を基軸とし、各装具までも含めた総合的な編年の構築を試みた。その結果、編年の大枠については展望を得ている。しかしながら、データの収集・整理に多大な時間を要したこと、必要な資料調査を消化できなかったことなどのため、公表しうる水準にまでは至っていない。
