The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of dance movements for developing the self-esteem of the participants. The following conclusions were drawn by the study : It is suggested that exercise has the impact on the self-efficacy, body image, and self esteem through especially theoretical studies by Lox, et. al., Martin and Lichtenberger, Sonstroem, and Fox. There were two experiment groups and one control group. The first experiment group was 42 college students who were taught a sequence of dance movements by a specialist dance instructor, the second experiment group was 26 self-study students who learned the same sequence of dance movements by watching a video clip, and the control group was 33 students who participated in other dance classes. The results indicated that the positive change in the quality of dance movement through the dance experience was related to the positive change of self-esteem. This may suggest that practicing dance accompanied by improvement in the quality of dance movements may help improve certain aspects of self-esteem of the participants. However, further studies may be needed to verify a causal relationship between changes of quality of dance movements and self-esteem.
