これまでの印欧語比較言語学研究の中で、十分な歴史的説明を与えてこられなかったゲルマン語過去現在動詞(preterite-present verbs)の現在形の発達に関する詳細、および語根が特異な延長階梯を示す強変化動詞(strong verbs)IV, V 類の過去複数形の発達に関する詳細について、「語等置の方法(the method of word equation)」を援用して新たな説明を提案することができた。それらの動詞形態は、印欧祖語の完了形と別のもうひとつの動詞形態の形態的混交(morphological conflation)を受けて発達したという仮説で首尾一貫した説明ができることを示した。
