調査した新潟県・山形県・秋田県・青森県、すべての県から角筆文献が発見され、東北日本・日本海沿岸地域においてはほぼその全域で角筆という文房具が使用され、角筆文字が書き入れられていたことが判明した。佐渡からは、竹製の角筆が発見された。今後、東日本全体を調査する必要性がある。以下、旧藩校あるいは関連資料の角筆使用状況について、分析・検討した結果(概要)を記す。旧長岡藩・崇徳館(新潟県)、旧庄内藩・致道館(山形県)、旧津軽藩・稽古館(青森県)の調査においては、すべてで角筆文献が発見されたが、調査文献中の角筆発見率はそれぞれ6.9%、2.0%、8.7%であって、致道館所蔵文献の発見率が最も低かった。これは、致道館の文献管理の厳重さと、現在の蔵書に他から紛れ込んだものがなく、当時のままの状態が保たれていることが大きな要因と考えられる。旧長岡藩・崇徳館の調査では、全体の角筆発見率が6.9%であるのに対して、経之部7.8%、史之部17.4%であるように、文献の種類によって角筆使用に相違が看取された。このことは、藩校における学問上の重点の置き方に結びつく可能性がある。旧津軽藩・稽古館調査では、「稽古館」の蔵書印を有する文献から角筆の発見はなかった。これは、上記致道館同様の文献管理の厳重さによるものと推測される。ただし、「弘前藩学校」「軍事局」等の蔵書印を有する文献からは角筆が見つかっており、幕末から明治初期にかけて文献の取り扱い方に変化が見られるようである。また、「奥文庫」の蔵書印を有する文献から角筆が発見されていることから、藩主もしくはそれに関係する人物が角筆を使用していたことが確認できた。旧庄内藩士・黒崎家および辺見家、旧秋田藩士・蓮沼家および長瀬家の文献調査から、藩士の家においては、藩校よりも格段に高い確率で角筆が使用されていることが判明した。管理が厳重な藩校の文献に比し、個人所有の文献に対する気軽さによるものと考えられる。また、家によって角筆の使用に差異が見られることもわかった。
