General study on the financial affairs of a feudal domain and the structure of its local community-based on materials of the Hagi feudal clan

This research, applied to the Hagi feudal domain, and following up with research on feudal domains carried recently in various places in Japan, attempts to explain in detail the relationship between the reign system of a feudal clan and its local community structure. The original approach of analysis of the reproduction system of the domain-the financial system-is used.First, in the analysis of the domain's financial system, I collected materials concerning the financial affairs of the feudal domain in the early modern period, mostly from the Yamaguchi Prefectural Archives Library of the Mohri feudal clan, and explained the financial system of the Hagi feudal domain in its formation period, using a three-dimensional approach, which was yet unstudied. By this analysis I was able to recognize the commonalities between the distribution system policy of the feudal domain and prosperity in the areas around the Seto Inland Sea in the late modern period.3. In researching the castle town, I gathered a large number of plans of the Hagi castle town by taking pictures of the plans with a digital camera, and carried out historiographical research thereupon ; that was still insufficient.4. To further elucidate the existential state of vassals as the essential factor in the character of the castle town, I collected fundamental materials such as ledgers of the land tenure with mentioned feofee's land tenure and tenure of office, Bungen-cho, and rules of judgment procedure and punishment system, Shioki-cho, and came to understand the existential situation of vassals.
