本研究の主題である「自己実現」は、現代語および現代教育における目標として一般化し通俗化してしまっているのにもかかわらず、その具体的内実が学術的に十分に検討されてきたとは言い難いものである。本研究は、この言葉に徹底密着し、それをめぐる諸々の「事実」を集積して、その社会的受容の様相について、特に思想レベルで展開された言説に注目しながら歴史的な観点から実証することが主たる目標であった。その結果、自己実現概念の歴史的展開をめぐって、多くの興味深い発見ができた。第一に、「自己実現」という日本語の歴史的原点は、イギリス理想主義の立場に立つ哲学者グリーン(T.H.Green)の「自我実現説=theory of self-realisation」が19世紀末に輸入・翻訳されたところに位置し、当時は「自我実現」という訳語の方が相対的に普及していた。第二に、明治期から第二次世界大戦前の時期の思想的展開として、「自己実現」の最大のキー概念が「人格」であったために、両者が極めて相関性の高い概念として扱われていただけでなく、自己実現が「人格の完成」と同義で用いられる例が頻繁に見受けられた。第三に、戦前日本における自己実現に関する輸入思想は、知識人の間に普及していくやいなや、すぐさま換骨奪胎される形で日本独自の展開を見せたが、個人主義的展開・国家主義的展開・神秘主義的展開といった三つの方向性が各々独自の展開を示したり、他の流れとせめぎ合ったり合流したり、さらには乗り換えがあったりしながら、相互干渉的に重層的に形成されていった末、国家主義的概念に回収されたと理解できる。
