足浴に用いる「香りの違い」による入眠促進効果を明らかにするため、3種類の香りの比較検討を行った。被験者は、健康な女性8名であり、脳波(16ch)、皮膚温(右手掌、胸部、左上腕、左下腿、左下肢)、血圧、心拍数を指標とした。実験は、室温(25-27℃)、湿度(50-60%)に維持した実験室で行い、閉眼安静15分間の後、10分間の足浴を行い、その後30分間閉眼にて安静状態を維持した。足浴は湯温40℃で外踵がつかる程度の湯量とした。足浴中は香り提示システムにより、被験者がわずかに自覚する程度の香りをマスクから流した。提示した香り条件は、(1)ラベンダー、(2)オレンジ、(3)サンダルウッドの3条件である。脳波の分析は、全てのデータをFFTにより周波数解析し、θ波、α波、β波の周波数帯域別にパワー値を算出した。それらのデータから、α波が50%以上消失し、低振幅θ波が出現する睡眠段階1を入眠期とし、入眠期の出現時間と持続時間を出した。皮膚温、血圧、心拍数は、5分間の平均値を算出し、比較した。脳波の結果から、3つの香り条件を比較したところ、入眠期の出現時間、および持続時間には香りによる有意な差は認められなかった。また、脳波以外の指標でも条件間に有意な差は認められなかった。いずれも香りでも足浴終了後、5-20分後に入眠期を迎えていたが、これは前年度行った研究での足浴のみ条件と同様の結果であった。被験者それぞれを見ると、入眠期が最も短い香りは3つの香りで偏りはなく、被験者による反応の違いが考えられた。今回の脳波の結果より、香りを付加した足浴の入眠促進効果は足浴と同様に認められるものが多かったが、香りによる違いは確認できなかった。しかし、入眠期の出現が短縮する香りは被験者により異なり、何らかの個人差が認められる可能性が考えられた。
