项目摘要

今年度は、昨年度の継続として、ニューヨークにおけるコミュニティ活動に従事したプエルトリカンと、アフリカ系アメリカ人との交流・交渉から生まれるアイデンティティ構築と政治活動について分析を行った。なかでも、社会活動家であり、ジャーナリスト、詩人という多面性を持つヘスス・コロンという人物に焦点を当て、その作品を通して、1930年代以降のニューヨークというコンテクストに置かれたプエルトリカンの、人種意識と政治への関与を考察した。その際には、同時代を生き、ハーレム・ルネサンスの高揚を支えた人物としてアフリカ系アメリカ人研究では著名なA・ショーンバーグが、黒人としての人種意識に基づいて活動したことが、対照的な存在として言及されるが、それによって、ヘスス・コロンが人種問題よりも社会主義を重要視して活動したという一般的な理解では充分ではない、プエルトリカン固有の人種意識の困難さを明かにした。差別に曝されたアメリカ社会において、自らの白人性に執着したとみなされがちなプエルトリカン移民は、その政治的実践においてはむしろ黒人性への覚醒、アイデンティティ構築というコンテクストに照らすことで、その思想的状況をより豊かに析出可能となるのである。さらに、1960年代の公民権運動のなかで登場するコミュニティ自助組織「ヤング・ローズ」の、社会運動への影響力も重要であった。ブラックパンサー党への敬意から誕生したこの組織は、コミュニティにおける生活の問題を、アイデンティティの政治という表現を用いて主張してきた人々であった。その主張内容は、人種意識の特徴、人種の多様性についての認識を踏まえた、新しい社会運動への萌芽として重要であり、今後の研究の方向に指針を得ることが出来た。最終年度となる今年度は、これまでの3年間の研究をまとめる作業を行い、国際学会その他でのプレゼンテーションを実施したほか、雑誌論文として発表した。また、成果の一部は、出版準備中の本のなかの1章として、現在編集中の段階である。
