项目摘要

本研究は、「非独立」状況にあるプエルトリコの独立論を、20世紀初頭から1930年頃までの時期に焦点を当てて再検討することを目的としてきた。二年目に当たる今年度は米国に現れる独立論を検討するため、前年度に収集した資料も含めて文献調査を行いつつ、論文をまとめる作業をおこなった。ニューディール期に行われたプエルトリコの経済改革に携わった米国人政治家や官僚、知識人などの人々が、どのような認識でプエルトリコの将来的な政治的ステイタスを展望して来たのか、プエルトリコ独立をめぐる思潮は、経済関係との相互交渉のなかで議論されるべき問題であり、さらなる調査の継続と深化が必要となることがわかった。一方、米国に移民したプエルトリカンの間でアフリカ系アメリカ人としての自己意識を涵養させながら、アメリカにおける黒人の公民権運動につながる活動を支えてきたプエルトリカンの存在は、島の独立論とはまた意趣を異にする重要な機制であることがわかった。今後の課題となりうる重要な論点を発見した。今年度は、従来の研究のなかでふまえてきた政界・財界のプエルトリコ認識に加えて、法曹界(米国最高裁)での市民権付与にまつわる議論にも焦点を当て、分析出来たことが大きな成果であった。また沖縄をはじめとする多様なマイノリティとの接触を経験したハワイ移民社会においてプエルトリコアイデンティティがどのような構想力を持ったかどうか、米国の帝国主義論の新展開としてフィリピン、メキシコとの比較研究を試みるなど、研究発表の機会を得て、意見の交換を行い、より大きなフレームワークのなかでこの問題を考える機会を得た。

This study focuses on the period from the beginning of the 20th century to the end of 1930. In the past two years, the independent theory of the country has been discussed, and the data collected in the previous year include literature research, research, and work.
