本研究では、英語の結果構文について実際の言語使用状況をインターネットの検索によって調査し、次の2点を明らかにした。(1)結果構文に生起する動詞の種類とこの構文の意味統語的特徴(2)結果構文に生起する動詞と結果句の選択制限上記に加えて、(1)と(2)に基づいた結果構文の統語構造を提示し、その妥当性を検討した。また、結果句として論理的に同じ意味合いをもつ形容詞句と前置詞句が結果構文に生じる場合、これらの結果句をとる動詞の意味的特徴を調べて、この2つの結果構文の意味的なニュアンスの違いを示した。
