日本・アジア太平洋の島嶼国家をフィールドに、離島地域の廃棄物問題として、とくに廃車(使用済自動車)の諸問題を中心に、(1)それぞれの離島地域で社会問題視されている問題点は具体的に何か、(2)それらの問題に対し、各国中央政府はモータリゼーションおよび経済のグローバリゼーションが進む中、どのような「政策公準」を掲げ、現実にはどのように対応しているか、という視点を基本にその歴史的変遷を中心に考察を行った。
