Performance Evaluation and Analysis of Japan-invested Firms in China

Based on literature survey and interviews with managers of 10 Japan-invested enterprises in China, this research has conducted questionnaire survey in Japan and China The questionnaire survey focused on Japan-invested businesses in non-manufacturing industries in China, which has not received in-depth empirical studies yet. 102 answers were received in Japan and 51 in China. Analysis on these answers reveals the following results. (1) Though improvement in performance indexes has been observed in recent years, the degree of satisfaction on the performance achievement is low. (2) Significant difference in financial performance improvement has been observed between wholly-owned businesses and joint ventures, and between the businesses that had prior experience in China and the ones that did not - financial performance improvement in the former kind of businesses is significantly higher than the latter. (3) However, the basic properties of Japan-invested businesses such as industry, organ … More ization form, entry timing, operation experience in China were not found significant to the satisfaction degree on the performance achievement ; (4) Regression analysis reveals that the following factors are significant factors to financial performance improvement : operation years, changes in external environment, operational monitoring by Japan headquarters, as well as the number of Japanese expatriate employees. (5) The significant factors to the satisfaction degree on the financial performance are as follows : the evaluation incentive measures for the Japanese expatriate managers, the number of Japanese expatriate employees as well as the changes in external environment. (6) The significant factors to the satisfaction degree on the strategic performance are as follows : trust between Japanese managers and Chinese employees, the evaluation incentive measures for the Japanese expatriate managers, the changes in external environment as well as the prior experience years of doing businesses in China. Less
