斑点米カメムシはイネが出穂すると周辺のイネ科雑草・牧草地から水田に侵入し、子実を吸汁することにより斑点米を生じさせる。斑点米カメムシの主要種アカヒゲホソミドリカスミカメを用いて水田への侵入メカニズムを解析したところ、彼らは開花しているイネ穂の香気に誘引されることにより、水田へ侵入することが明らかになった。さらに、開花したイネ穂から多く放出されるβ-caryophyllene等いくつかの物質が誘引の原因物質であることを突き止めた。
