レジオネラ菌(Legionella pneumophila)は重症肺炎の起炎菌として、しばしば臨床的問題となっている。当該研究ではレジオネラ菌の無作為遺伝子変異株を作製し、その原因遺伝子の探索を行った。その結果、レジオネラ菌ゲノム上に計7個の責任遺伝子が同定された。これらはレジオネラ菌において分泌機構に関わっていることが知られている遺伝子だったため、なんらかの分泌因子がレジオネラ菌より分泌され、これによってレジオネラ肺炎が重症化するものと考えられた。
