Reduction of engine idle speed will provide significant improvements in fuel efficiency. Current techniques are based on simplified models of a complex engine system and as a result do not fully exploit the possible controller capability. Therefore this project proposes new engine models and will provide novel controller methods to address this problem. This should contribute to increased engine stability and faster torque response to disturbances like air conditioner engagement, for both LPG and gasoline injected engines, thus allowing the engine idle speed to be lowered without risking stall or impairing the engine Noise, Vibration and Harshness quality.
