本研究では,岡山県に残された朝鮮通信使の足跡について,主に絵画作品を中心に調査研究してきた。岡山藩における通信使の宿館であった牛窓の本蓮寺には,多くの墨跡や調度品が残されている。このことは,従来から知られてきたことではあるが,本研究における聞き取り調査において,第二次大戦中に憲兵がその遺物を持ち去って破壊しようとしていた事実が明らかとなった。このことは逆説的に,通信使が先進文化を伝えたことが周知の事実であったことを物語っている。破壊をおそれて遺物を隠匿し,また通信使を話題にさえ出さなくなったために,同じく牛窓に伝わる「唐子踊り」はいまだに伝承経路さえ明らかにされ得ないのであろう。また,四宮家から船団図が発見された下津井,あるいは足守においてもフィールドワークを展開したが新たな成果を上げることはできなかった。本研究において特筆すべきは,倉敷市連島にある宝島寺における調査である。「米友仁を倣う」と但し書きされ「李金谷」の落款がある水墨山水画,王勃『滕王閣序』の一節を屏風に仕立てたものに関しては,寺に残された文献には通信使との関わりが示唆されているものの,真偽のほどは不明である。とりわけ後者は,詩の途中から書き始められていること,誤字脱字があること,詩の連の順番を間違えていることなどから,偽作の可能性が高いが,そうでなければ使臣の誰かが練習用に書したものを日本人がこっそり持ち帰り寺に寄進したのではないかと推測される。制作年代の特定が急がれる。また,第10回の朝鮮通信使の随行員朴敬行らと岡山藩士近藤篤との筆談集『停嵯邂逅録』,および「矢上山」の扁額が第10回の朝鮮通信使に随行した金啓升の手によるものであることも久しく忘れられていた(李元植による詳細な目録,「筆談唱和集総目録」や「通信使の遺墨」にも記載されていない)が,本研究において再び明るみに出された。
