ケネディ大統領図書館にて史料調査を行い、主な史料約1500点をデジタルカメラで撮影して持ち帰った。これにより、日本国内で利用できる公刊史料集だけでは知ることのできなかった以下の点を新たに明らかにすることができた。(1)既に1961年初頭の段階から国務省においては、ベルリン危機の解決のために、西ドイツによる核保有を禁止するという案などを骨子とする「ヨーロッパ安全保障」を実現すべき、という構想が準備され始めていたこと。特に、西欧局ドイツ課課長マーティン・ヒレンブランドが重要な役割を果たしていた。(2)1961年7月から9月にかけて、この構想を採用し、ケネディに進言し、実践させることにおいては、国家安全保障問題担当大統領補佐官マクジョージ・バンディが重要なイニシアティブを発揮していたこと。(3)1962年初頭の段階でケネディ政権がこの構想を再び実践しようとした際にも、バンディによるケネディへの働きかけが重要であったこと。(4)その際、この構想を精密化し、実践することにおいては、国務省西欧局長フォイ・コーラーが、バンディとの連携に基づいて重要な役割を果たしていた。この構想の実践を西ドイツに納得させることにおいてもコーラーは重要な役割を果たしていた。(5)総じて、ベルリン危機に関する対ソ交渉戦術の策定、実践においては、国家安全保障会議と国務省の連携が上手く機能したこと。以上の成果は、これまでの成果と合わせて、書籍として刊行することを目指している。
