2006年度には認知症患者の家族会において介護家族および会世話人への聞き取りと、会の活動の参与観察を実施したが、2007年度にはそこで語られた「望ましい老い」と対比して考察する目的で、若年認知症患者の家族会のフィールドワークを実施した。また同会と共同で患者家族および若年認知症患者本人へのアンケート調査およびインタビュー調査を実施した(調査報告書を2008年度に刊行予定)。インタビュー内容については現在分析中であるが、現代の老いのあり方について、暫定的に以下の点について述べておく。かつて「認知症」は高齢者、高齢期を語るキーワードとしてあったが、認知症が病気であることの認識が進んだことから、現在、認知症患者の家族介護の現場では、二重の意味で老いの隠蔽が生じやすい状況にある。第一に、認知症患者の老いは「認知症の進行」として扱われ、その進行によって何かができなくなること(老いによる衰退が含まれる)についても「できないことではなく、できることを見よう」という形で不可視化される。第二に、認知症を介護する家族、特に患者と同年代の夫・妻、きょうだいらは、主介護者であり続けなければならないという意識や実際上の余裕のなさから、「年をとっている場合ではない」、「自分の老いは考えないことにしている」と述べる。ある意味で介護者は、カプセル化された介護関係の中で、老いることの「ゆるされなさ」を感じている。結果、いわゆる「老々介護」と呼ばれる状況であってさえ、「老い」は意識化されないという事態が生ずる。「高齢期の自己決定」が明言されるのは、多く「不健康となった場合の自己の処置」を語る場合である。老いの語りは医療や健康の語りに回収されるしかないのであろうか。
