项目摘要

本年度は、(1)史料調査と(2)研究成果の発表を中心に活動を行った。(1)史料調査では、まず牛の多頭所有者であった岡山県後月郡高屋村高木家の史料群(岡山県立記録資料館所蔵)を調査し、マイクロ化されている史料のうちより、牛経営帳簿を中心に紙焼き収集していった。高木家に関しては、目下分析検討中である。次に島根県立図書館と出雲市立図書館にて、『島根県統計書』、『島根県農事調査報告書』、『島根県農事統計』、『島根県の畜産』、『島根県飯石郡治一斑』といった家畜に関する統計書類の調査収集を行った。これは牛だけでなく馬の動向を探るのが目的であった。統計書の分析より、馬は主としてたたら製鉄の運搬業務に従事していたこと、近代以降の馬頭数の衰退傾向は、たたら製鉄の衰退傾向と軌を一にしていることが実証できた。この研究成果は近いうちに発表する予定である。また牛の品種改良へ着目していた、中国和牛研究会に関する史料も現在収集中である。その他、古老や家畜商への聞き書き調査も再開し、聞き書きノートを作成中である。(2)研究成果として、「牛生産地域における家畜所有の歴史的展開」(『日本史研究』545号、2008)を発表することができた。また日本農業史学会にて「中国山地における役牛生産と流通」と題する報告を行い、一定の評価は得られたと考えている。この報告内容は現在投稿中である。その他、鞍下牛に関する論考、家畜小作概念を再検討する論考を準備中である。
