平成20年度は1935年7月の人事で浮上した真崎教育総監更迭問題を中心に、二・二六事件が発生するまでの陸軍内部の動向についての分析を行った。この問題は、陸軍中央の中でも中堅幕僚たちの水面下による活動の影響が非常に強い。荒木陸相辞任後はその影響力をかき消すべく、反荒木の中堅幕僚たちが陸軍中枢部に属する上官に対して書面で「真崎罷免」を懇願するなどの行動を起こしている。そこで、本研究では中堅幕僚たちによる諸活動の実態を解明していくことにした。分析史料としては、国会図書館憲政資料室所蔵「片倉衷関係文書」を使用した。「片倉衷関係文書」は近年になり新しい原史料が追加され、軍人宛ての書簡が多く収められている。平成20年度の科学研究費補助金は、この史料の収集作業に利用した。片倉は満州事変の際にも暗躍し、荒木を支持する青年将校から忌嫌われる存在であった(実際、二・二六事件の時に磯部浅一からの銃弾を浴びている)。板垣征四郎や石原莞爾などと親しい片倉は、彼らに頻繁に書簡を送り、真崎を罷免するよう促している。以上のような問題関心をふまえ、陸軍中堅幕僚の内部活動の実態を解明していくことにする。取り上げる事例としては真崎教育総監更迭問題における中堅幕僚たち(片倉を中心とした)の活動実態を研究分析していった。そして、かつては陸軍の中心であった荒木や真崎が、陸軍内のいわば悪役として位置づけられていく過程を明らかにした。なお、上記研究実績を踏まえ、現在、私は博士論文及び学術雑誌に投稿予定の論文の執筆作業を行っている。
