本研究は、エンブ社会構造をシングルマザー、婚姻、土地相続、親族組織、慣習法、相互扶助組織、貧困地区「ゲサギ」、マウマウ戦争といった観点から多角的に捉えるものである。特に本年度はそれまでの基礎的研究をふまえて、いかにエンブ社会が変容していったのか、1950年代に起こったマウマウ戦争以降の社会動態を追究することを課題とした。具体的には、マウマウ戦争に関連する証言をさらに詳細にとり、これまでマウマウ研究において偏見や推測によって行われていた議論を大幅に修正するだけの情報を収集した。さらに「ゲサギ」の成立過程を調査し、シングルマザーがどのように増加し、「ゲサギ」に吸収されていったのか、ゲサギ居住者の証言によって明らかにした。また、マウマウ戦争以来、婚資支払いの延長もしくは不払いが広く見られるようになり、その結果、婚資の意味自体もそれにともなって変化しているが、このような婚姻制度の変化はエンブ社会の家族のあり方を劇的に変えている。シングルマザーの増加に対しても、従来の慣習法では十分に対応できず、このような婚姻の不安定性は、子どもの立場にも影響を与えている。エンブ社会は基本的に父系社会であるが、子供の存在を無視する男性が多くなっている現在、母系的な側面が強くなっており、子供は母親をとおして系譜がたどられる傾向にある。全体的に子供の立場の不安定性はエンブ社会における女性の地位の不安定性に対応しており、エンブ社会構造の揺らぎの根本を示していることを今回明らかにした。
