研究課題である博士論文(全三章)の第一章では、都市をめぐる文学的主題を考察した。まず19世紀文学でしばしば取り上げられているペテルブルグのイメージとその変遷を追い、1840年代にフランス文学の影響を受けて流行した「生理学もの」オーチェルクと、40年代の「生理学もの」の流れを受け継ぐ1860年代以降のオーチェルクのうちに、ペテルブルグの近代化の過程が描かれているのを分析した。次に、都市の近代化にともなって出現した群衆像の変遷を、プーシキン、レールモントフ、ツルゲーネフ、オガリョフの詩やベリンスキーのオーチェルク、ドストエフスキー作品を取り上げ考察し、群衆の出現が40年代の「生理学もの」の流行と密接な関わりをもっていることを指摘した。さらに、都市の雑踏の中で物思いに耽る「遊歩者」に焦点を当てた。観察者でもある遊歩者の目を通して都市の情景が描かれているドストエフスキーの初期作品を取り上げ、バルザック、ディケンズ、ポーらの同時代の作品と比較、分析した。また60年代以降のドストエフスキー作品では、遊歩者像のうちに都市と個人との空隙が映し出されていることを指摘した。第二章では、まず60年代以降の社会状況を概観し、ペテルブルグの産業の発展に伴って現われた工場ものオーチェルクについて触れ、都市生活に対する不安が文学作品に描かれていることを指摘した。資本主義化による貧富の差の拡大や社会の無秩序を問題とする文学作品が、60年代以降盛んに書かれたが、その中でもクレストフスキーの『ペテルブルクの場末』、60年代以降のドストエフスキー作品に見られるメロドラマ的要素に着目し、メロドラマ演劇がロシアで盛んに上演されたのが30〜40年代であるのに対して、メロドラマ的な小説が書かれるようになったのが60年代になってからであること、その背景には農奴解放後の資本主義化による、社会状況の変化があることを指摘した
