書院志や地方志に見られる詩や文をとおして、嶽麓書院と背後の嶽麓山との関係について考察した。嶽麓山に登る文人たちは、飛来石において聖なる衡山を拝するとともにその風景によって開放されていた。また禹碑の前に立っては、いにしえの聖帝に想いをはせていた。文人たちは嶽麓山において、空間的、時間的に遠くの聖なるものを自らの近くに感じていたといえる。嶽麓山はそのように聖なるものを分有する山として、嶽麓書院の背後に意味を与えていたことを明らかにした。
