災害に関連する未刊行の文書の発見・確認により、海と共存する社殿の維持には、突発的な災害対策活動以外にも日常の活動が重要であることが明らかとなった。また、本殿内の玉殿安置形式は事前防災の観点から生じたともいえる。その形式は安芸国に広く分布し、厳島神社を祖型とすることが判明した。さらに、その他類例調査の分析により、施設の維持には災害の許容などの特徴が見出され、厳島神社の伝統的な災害回避と保護機能が明らかとなった。
