本研究の目的は、初期国家成立以前のアンデス文明形成期(B.C.2500-50)における権力の生成過程を動態的に捉え、これを理論化したモデルの構築である。本研究では、当該社会の統合の中心とされる祭祀建造物を対象とし、17年度からペルー・ハエン郡にて遺跡分布調査と発掘調査を実施してきた。調査では、長期の建設活動を確認し、コンテクストの確かな土器などの人工遺物と生物依存体(獣骨、貝)などの自然遺物といった充実したデータを獲得した。そして20年度は、前年度までの成果を受けて出土資料の整理・分析作業に重点的に取り組んだ。建築については、作成した図面と測量データを組み合わせ、時期ごとの建設プロセスを明らかにした。また、人工遺物については地点・層位ごとに整理・分析をすすめ、建設活動との対応を明確にした。特に、土器と石器は、先行研究をふまえて分類し、周辺地域との比較分析の基礎を築き、土器編年を打ち立てた。自然遺物は、専門家に種の同定を依頼し、その結果、海岸部より遠隔地にある調査地で、海産種の貝が特に装身具として多く利用されたことがわかった。また、魚類や獣骨の種の同定を通じて当該地域の生業の一端もうかがえた。さらに、土器内壁の依存体の分析ではトウモロコシが検出され、儀礼活動との関連が強く示唆されるなど、物資の流通ルートといった先史アンデス形成期に関する多くの具体的なデータが得られた。これらは、調査地の社会動態と祭祀建造物を中心として展開した地域間交流の実態を実証データから明らかにしつつあるという点において、アンデス先史学のボトムアップに貢献するだけではなく、アンデス文明形成期における権力の生成メカニズムの実証的な解明作業の手がかりとなるものであり、特に重要である。また、日本では主に研究関連文献を収集、渉猟し、今後の研究の基礎を築いた。
