本研究は、近代日本の作製した台湾関係地図を調査し、その作製者・年代・方法・様式・内容といった全体像を明らかにしつつ、近代日本製台湾地図の有する意義と役割を解明することを目的とする。以上の目的を遂行するために、本年度は具体的に主に以下の3つの研究成果を挙げた。A:2008年3月に投稿した論文は、指導教官及び審査員の指摘を受けて、内容を大幅に修正し、更に大阪の民俗博物館での調査を踏まえて、台湾地籍図統計関係資料の不足点を補ったものである(学会誌への発表1)。B:これは、台湾出兵から日清戦争までの時期における近代日本の台湾製地図について全般的な考察を行ったものである。ここで筆者は、国立公文書館、国会図書館、東京国立博物館の台湾関係地図に関する調査報告書『従日本古地図看台湾』(2005)の内容に、更に筆者自身による中央図書館台湾分館、台湾歴史博物館、呉三連台湾史料基金会での調査結果や当時の新聞に掲載された台湾関係地図をも踏まえて、総括的な検討を行った。筆者は、収集した地図の収蔵機関と形態、地図の作製・刊行者、成り立ち、それらの作製の空間的展開、形態、内容など様々な側面でいくつかの事実を具体的に辿った(学会誌への発表2)。C:筆者は、現在にいたるまでの研究成果に加えて、岐阜県立図書館、財団法人台湾協会、国会図書館、台北市文献委員会、中央図書館台湾分館、中央研究院、台湾大学などにおいて日本植民地時代日本製台湾の地図を収集した。そして、これらの地図を様々な分類基準に照らして概観し、また「内容」の分類手法によって分析している。
