研究代表者の常勤職採用により、半年間の研究活動となったが、(1)人種主義に関しての理論研究と(2)近代琉球弧を舞台とした事例研究に関して、一定の成果を得た。(1)に関しては、経済史系のマクロヒストリーや資本主義論の文献と、現代の日本における米国社会論の言説をつきあわせつつ講読した。その結果、「日本型資本主義」と言われた全国民大でのコーポラティズムと対比される、「米国型新自由主義」の流動的かつネットワーク的な社会のあり方は、近世期から経済発展のあり方が、一人当たりの生活水準の上昇には必ずしもつながらない形で総量のみを拡大させる外包的(外延的)なものへと転化していた、伝統中国の事例を参照しつつ理解することができ、それが「古典的人種主義から新人種主義への変容」と言われる今日的現象とも、密接に関わっているという理論的示唆を得ることができた。このように考えれば、現在進行しているとされる「ポストモダン社会への移行」や「日本の米国化」は、歴史的な視角からはむしろ「近代から近世への回帰」および「日本の中国化」としても把握できることとなる。これについては、来春刊行予定の国際社会論の論集に寄稿を予定中であり、草稿の時点では掲載の内諾をいただいている。(2)については、明年刊行予定の沖縄関連事典の分担執筆を依頼され、歴年の研究成果を「沖縄人」ほかの項目に反映させる機会を得たほか、今秋開催の史学会における琉球史関連シンポジウムにおいてもコメンテーターを担当する予定である。(1)の論点とも関連するが、主権や国境の概念が人種主義とともに曖昧になる「ポスト近代化」ないしは「<帝国>化」の諸側面を「再近世化」として見る視点を、琉球史においても提示しえると考えている。
