项目摘要

平成20年度は、19世紀の政治家・思想家バンジャマン・コンスタンの思想において政治論と宗教諭がどのような関係にあるのかを検討した。これを解明することは、現在、コンスタン研究の最大の課題の一つであり、また18世紀啓蒙とフランス革命との関係という大問題を考える上でも、非常に大切なものである。筆者は年度途中で一定の見通しを得たため、博士論文の執筆作業に入った(継続中)。政治論については、平成19年度以来、フランス革命による内戦を克服するためにナポレオンがすすめた強権政治にコンスタンがどのように対抗したのかを検討してきた。当初は、軍事法廷の活用、陪審制・請願権の制限といったナポレオン政権の政策に対するコンスタンの批判を検討していたが、研究を進めていく中でコンスタンがこれらの問題を、地方分権を基礎とする司法システムの確立、市民の政治参加による代議制の欠陥の矯正といった、より広い文脈の中で論じていることが分かった。そこで究極的に問題にされているのは、権力からの自由を求める市民が、同時に、自由な体制の維持に不可欠の市民の義務(選挙、陪審員、兵役など)を誠実に果たすためには、いかなるモラルを持つ必要があるのかということである。宗教論については、平成19年度以来、功利主義に基づいて宗教の不用論を唱えたり、宗教を秩序維持のための道具とみなしたりする議論に対して、コンスタンが批判を加え、人間には宗教感情が本性的に備わっていると主張した点を検討してきた。この主張がコンスタンの政治論とどのように連関するのか、容易に掴めなかったが、年度の途中で、彼が最終的には宗教感情とモラルの結合の必要を説いていること、そして、それがいかなる条件(宗教形式、文明、商業、政治体制)の下で可能になるのかを問題にしていることが分かった。その結果、政治論と宗教論をモラルという概念によって統一的に理解する目処がたった。
