平成18年度末に完成した正倉院文書データベースをもととして、メタデータのさまざまな可能性について検討を加えた。正倉院文書データベースは、史料構造に特化したメタデータを付与している。そのため、史料の構造を表現することには向いているが、他の関連データベースとの関係には向いていない。そこで、その可能性について探ったのが、本研究の目的であった。19年度は、日本史に関わるデータベースのメタデータについて、事例検討と、実際のデータベース化に関するモデル化を行った。特に、今までに用いられてきた共通メタデータ(EAD)の使用例と、実際の史料への実用化の検討、異なるタイプの史料(写真など)でのメタデータのありようなどを検討した。EADの使用例については、特に近代の行政関係史料を中心にメタデータの付加について検討を行った。近代史料においては、実際に先行事例があり、かつ、複雑な構造をもつ史料であるという好例であったため、とりあげ、検討した。実際には、史料群としての認識は可能であるものの、複雑な史料構造を、効果的にメタデータ上で表現するためには、なお課題が多いことが判明した。また、写真に関しても、少ないながら、先行事例は存在する。しかし、そのデータ項目について、ほとんど、まとまったものがないのが現状である。そのため、近代古写真を対象とし、写真史料学の研究者に助言を得つつ、データベースの作成に取り掛かった。この事例は史料自体の性質としては遠いものの、未知の課題について、メタデータを付す際の、問題点の洗い出しには効果的であった。また、秋には海外での研究発表を開催し、関連研究者との討論を行った。本課題は、いったん途上で、終了することとなるが、引き続き同様の研究を模索するものである。
