We have previously translated the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS) into Japanese. In the present study, we calculated cut-off points of the Japanese MBI-GS based on 5, 621 data obtained from the many different studies conducted by us so far. Thus, for exhaustion, the cut-off point was 3.60 or higher; for cynicism, the cut-off point was 2.20 or higher; and for professional efficacy, the cut-off point was 1.83 or lower. Then, the "exhaustion + 1" criterion recommended by Brenninkmeijer & Van Yperen was applied. Subjects with intense exhaustion and either a high level of cynicism or a low level of professional efficacy, or both, were considered to have burned out.Next, we examined the association between burnout and physical health in a follow-up study. The study population included male middle managers working for a manufacturing company in Japan. In total, 329 male middle managers were followed up 4 years after baseline. In accordance with above Japanese specific criter … More ion, the baseline MBI-GS scale scores were divided into a healthy group and a burnout group. As a result, 39 subjects were categorized into the burnout group, and the remaining 290 into the healthy group. Four years later, there were significant differences between the healthy and burnout groups in regard to waist circumference, body weight, and BMI. The estimated average change on total cholesterol tended to be larger in the burnout group. Significant differences between the healthy and burnout groups were found in regard to hemoglobin and fibrinogen levels. There was no significant difference in blood pressure as well as glucose levels between the healthy group and the burnout group.In conclusion, burnout, which results from prolonged exposure to chronic work stress, appears to be a risk factor for arteriosclerotic disease.
