The aim of this research is to examine the degree to which the existence of professional team sports contributed in fashioning an image of a city and the affect the teams had on the social life of the inhabitants. The use of professional team sports for rejuvenating a city economy has been analyzed in Japan since the foundation of the Japan Soccer League in 1993. It is often advocated that the existence of professional team sports might contribute to the image of the city thus bringing some positive economic impact to the area Some scholars however, continue to hold a skeptical view of that assertion. We focused on Sapporo and Sendai where hosted the 2002 World Cup Finals but there have not been any professional sports teams in these cities before the mid 1990s. Through interviews from city government officials, the respective teams (Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters: Baseball, Consadole Sapporo: Soccer, Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles: Baseball, Vegalta Sendai: Soccer, Montedio Yamagata: Soccer, Pioneer Red Wings: Volleyball), volunteers, and the use of questionnaires from supporting companies in Sapporo and Sendai, we showed that the people in each city actively supported their teams in such ways as volunteering even though most people realized that the existence of professional team sports brought less economic advantages than first speculated. It was showed from questionnaires that people was unlikely to interact with each other as the inhabitants, while teams were effective for attracting spectators within abstract sporting space. The case studies suggested that a pro-growth strategy in each city was too improbable to succeed, yet new social spheres were created through imaginative movements like the Eco Stadium Project in Sendai under the enchanting city
