日本南西諸島に棲息するハブ属ヘビの中でも、島同士が明らかに隔離しており、背中の模様や体長などが島特異的なハブ属ヘビ(トカラハブ、サキシマハブ、イヘヤジマハブ)を対象として、それぞれの粗毒に含まれる毒腺ホスホリパーゼA2(PLA2)アイソザイムの組成やアミノ酸配列を明らかにした。島特異的なこれらの分子進化と、ミトコンドリアDNAの塩基配列を基にした各ヘビの分岐関係とを照らし合わせ、毒腺PLA2は餌などの棲息環境因子に適応して進化してきたことを見出した。
