二次元高分解能二次イオン質量分析計(Nano-SIMS)を用い、珪酸塩骨格を持つ海洋動物プランクトンである放散虫骨格中の元素組成(特にケイ酸塩濃度の指標となる可能性があるゲルマニウム)を種別・個体別に分析した。従来のバルク試料の分析結果と異なり、放散虫骨格中のGe/Si比が著しく低く、生息水深や時代を通じてほとんど変化しないことがわかった。このことから、少なくとも放散虫に関しては、骨格形成時に海水のGe/Si比を反映しないことが示唆された。
