中国の北魏から唐代に至る供養者の図像的変化を検討してみると、北朝の供養者像は、供養者たちが教化・指導僧を伴って参列する様をあらわした立像形式のものが主流をなしていたが、初唐になると供養者自らが仏前で跪き、自ら柄香炉などの供物を手に執り、または合掌して本尊に祈りを捧げる姿で表現されたものが多くなる。この北朝から初唐にかけての供養者像の変化は、単に図像的な問題ではなく、供養者像に肖像としての性格がある以上、それは供養者(信徒)たちの内的・心情的変化の問題としても捉えるべきであろう。本年度は、初唐以降に供養者の図像が大きく変化し、供養者自らが手に供物を執り「跪く」姿勢で表現されるようになった理由について検討した。その理由としてはまず第一に、他の仏教造像と同様、インドなど西方からの影響が中国に広く及んだ可能性が考えられた。ただし、中国には初唐以前からたびたび西方の影響が及んでいたことを踏まえれば、西方からの影響のほかに、別の理由があったものと思われる。そこで考えられる第二の理由は、一般の信徒たちの信仰による内面的変化である。すなわち唐代の信徒たちは慈悲救済の性格の強い仏菩薩にすがり、自らが救われんがために直接仏と向き合うようになったと考えられ、彼ら信徒たちが行う供養法(仏との関わり方)が北朝の僧尼主導型から唐代の個人礼拝型へと変容していったものと推測される。こうした唐代の信徒たちの内面的な変化があってはじめて、自らの肖像たる供養者像に、西方由来の跪いて祈る姿の図像を採用するようになったのではないかと考えられた。

Before the early Tang Dynasty, China was influenced by the West, and there were other reasons for it. The second reason is that the general believer has changed his inner face. In the Tang Dynasty, the believers were compassionate and saved, and the character was strong. The Bodhisattva was in the right place, and the believers were in the right place. The Buddhist monks and nuns of the Northern Dynasty dominated the Tang Dynasty. In the Tang Dynasty, the believers 'inner face was transformed into a portrait of themselves, and the image of the Western origin was adopted.
