本年度は中国,四国,近畿,東海を中心とする地域の教育委員会などを訪問し,資料の提供を受けた。資料数は約20遺跡分となった。本年度は最終年度にあたるため,昨年度分の調査結果と合わせてデータを検討した。調査目的は,弥生時代後期〜古墳時代の墳墓から大量に出土するベンガラの形態的特徴と鉱物組成を遺跡・遺構ごとに明らかにし,編年と地域性を明らかにすることにあり,この目的に沿って目視観察,実体顕微鏡観察,生物顕微鏡観察,電子顕微鏡観察,蛍光X線分析,X線回折他をおこなった。西日本の古墳時代前期の前方後円(方)墳の埋葬施設について検討をおこなったところ,中空円筒状の粒子を持つベンガラ(以下,パイプ状ベンガラ)が普遍的に認められる一方で,北部九州ではこの特徴的な粒子を含まないベンガラ(以下,非パイプ状ベンガラ)が主体を占めていることが判明した。他者の報告も含めてこれまでの分析報告事例を整理すると,北部九州の弥生時代後期から古墳時代の墳墓では,一貫して非パイプ状ベンガラを使用していたと考えられる。そもそも埋葬施設でベンガラを用いることは弥生時代中期末〜後期初頭の北部九州が初源と考えられており,前方後円墳の登場以降その風習が西日本に広まる。北部九州外へ伝播する過程で,非パイプ状ベンガラがパイプ状ベンガラに置き換わっている。これらベンガラに含まれている粒子の違いは,原料の違いに起因するものと思われる。パイプ状ベンガラは湖沼に生息する鉄細菌を焼成して得られたものであることが判っている。非パイプ状ベンガラの原料はよくわかっていないが,両者で原料が異なっていたことは予想される。したがって,北部九州で誕生した墳墓埋葬施設にベンガラを用いる風習は,北部九州では非パイプ状ベンガラを用いていたものの,その風習が古墳時代になって西日本に広まる過程でベンガラの種類がパイプ状ベンガラに置き換えられたものと考えられる。このパイプ状ベンガラがヤマトから直接もたらされたものなのか,各地域にあった材料が用いられただけなのか,なお検討の余地があるが,今後さらなる調査と検討を行いたい。
