本研究では、九州の墳墓出土ベンガラを対象に粒子形態及び元素・鉱物組成から分類を行い、その時間的、地域的変遷を把握した上で、ベンガラの流通とその背景について検討を行うことを目的とする。２年度目の令和４年度は、コロナ禍での社会経済活動の再開に伴い、自粛していた館外での調査を年度後半から再開した。九州南部の調査では、在地系の地下式横穴墓と外来系の古墳の調査から興味深い知見を得た。地下式横穴墓は約50基の調査を行い、鉄細菌素材の直径約１μｍのパイプ状粒子を含むベンガラ（以下、Ｐ類）の採用が明らかになった。一方、古墳は６基の調査を行い、主体部において鉄鉱石素材と推定される不定形粒子を持つベンガラ（以下、不定形類）の採用が明らかになった。研究代表者によるこれまでのベンガラの調査から、日本列島全域ではＰ類の採用が一般的であることから、九州南部の在地系墓制である地下式横穴墓でのＰ類の採用は汎列島的な現象と考えられる。一方、外来系の古墳での不定形類の採用は、このベンガラが古墳の築造にあたり特別に準備されたものである可能性を示す。隣接する熊本県の阿蘇では大量の褐鉄鉱が産出し、これを焼成して製造されたベンガラが弥生・古墳時代の特産品であったことが古くから指摘されている。この褐鉄鉱は特徴的な形態を持つ粒子を含んでおらず、不定形類のベンガラの素材になり得る。熊本の古墳でも不定形類のベンガラが採用されており、九州南部の古墳で採用された不定形類についても、阿蘇からもたらされたものである可能性が極めて高いと判断できる。以上の研究成果は、『鹿児島大学総合研究博物館研究報告19　大隅大崎神領10号墳III』で公表している。

This study aims to investigate the particle morphology, element composition, classification, time and geographical change of objects unearthed in Kyushu. In the second half of the year, the social and economic activities in the second half of the year will be reopened. The investigation of the southern part of Kyushu has been carried out, and the underground transverse tombs of the terrestrial system and the investigation of the ancient tombs of the exotic system have been discovered. In the investigation of underground transverse cave tomb, the diameter of iron bacteria material is about 1μm, and the particle shape is about 1μm. In the investigation of the six bases of the ancient tomb, the main body part is used to estimate the amorphous particles. The representative of the research team conducted a survey on the use of general P type tombs in the whole Japanese archipelago, and a survey on the use of P type tombs in underground horizontal caves in the southern part of Kyushu. The possibility of adopting an amorphous type of ancient tomb from a square or foreign system is shown. A large amount of brown iron is produced in the vicinity of Kumamoto, and the special products of Yayoi and Furumoto era are produced by burning. The characteristic morphology of the brown iron particles contains particles, amorphous particles and materials. Kumamoto's ancient grave is an amorphous category, and the ancient grave in southern Kyushu is an amorphous category. The possibility of Aso's ancient grave is extremely high.
