ネットワーク効果を持つ産業の重要な課題のひとつとして、企業の経営戦略のあり方の議論が知られている。中でも複数の異なる規格の間に互換性を持たせるか否かは、規格間競争のあり方に重要な影響を及ぼす。本研究計画では、この互換性の問題に焦点を絞り、実証的な観点から提言を行なうことを目的とした。製品間に互換性を持たせるか否かの経営判断は、大きく分けて技術革新と市場競争の2つに対して影響を与える。互換性がない規格が競争する場合には、企業はそれぞれ自分の規格に消費者を囲い込むために、競い合って性能の向上に努めるが、互換性がある規格の間には、技術革新を行なうインセンティブは小さい。一方で、互換性をもたない規格同士は、互換性をもつ規格と比較して差別化されていることから、製品間の競争はより緩やかになる傾向が見られる。互換性の有無が、技術革新および市場の競争構造にどれだけの影響を与えているのかは、未だ分析されていない実証的な課題である。アメリカにおけるビデオゲーム産業のデータを使って、上記のような互換性の影響を観察するために、19年度においては前年度において収集したビデオゲームのハード(ゲーム機)およびゲームソフトに関するデータをもとに、ゲームソフトの導入のタイミングおよびその収入構造の経済的なメカニズムを動学的な観点から推計を行なった。推計において、(1)ゲームソフトの収入の時系列的な動きはL字型をとること、(2)互換性のある規格についてはL字型がより鮮明に表れること、が明らかになると共に、製品ごとの需要における代替弾力性の強弱と製品導入のタイミングが大きな関連性を持つことが推計結果により明らかにされた。
