現代日本では、男女共同参画社会基本法が施行されるなどのように、男女平等社会実現に向けての施策が進められている。一方、どのような社会のあり方を男女平等と捉えるかについては、様々な意見があり、意見が対立する状況も見られる。しかし、これまでの心理学の研究ては、男女平等に関する意見の対立を解消し、合意形成を促促進する要因、及び妨害する要因を明らかにするため、次の二つの研究を行った。第一に、男女共同参画に関わる施策の企画や運営等に関わった地方公共団体の行政職員を対象とする面接調査を行った。面接調査では、これまでに行った各施策の内容や、各施策に対する議員や住民からの反応、また、議員や住民の意見調整の方法等について尋ねた。その結果、国レベルの法律が存在する場合や、セミナーの実施によって他者の意見に触れる機会を提供する場合や、庁舎において性別役割分業を廃止する場合などに、男女共同参画への議員や住民の理解を深められることが示唆された。第二に、質問紙調査によって男女平等のあり方に対する態度が異なると判断された大学生2名1組に対して、男女平等に関する討論をするように求め、意見の差異が解消される過程を検討した。討論での発言内容等を分析した結果、意見の差異を解消するための方略が複数示唆された。たとえば、「現代日本に見られる男女の格差を解消するために、進入社員を採用する際には、その人の能力にかかわらず、男性と女性とを同数採用すること」は、男女の特性を無視するために男女不平等であると考える者に対して、他方の者は、男女の特性を社会が活かしきるために、「男性と女性とを同数採用」し、女性の労働場所を確保すべきであるといったように、他者の意見を自分の意見に包括する方略などが示唆された。
